Woven heart
 While creating a box in the shape of a heart, students talk about directions and gift giving.

You will need:

  • A variety of color pencils and crayons.
  • For each student, two halves of a paper heart, each one in a different color (see template).
Suggested vocabulary:

          in front  behind  across  above  below  inside  outside  weave  heart  gift  holiday  love  friend  give

Instructions:

This is a template that you should follow to make half of a woven heart. Each student needs two of them, one in each color.


 
1. Hold a piece in each hand. Cross one piece over the other with the rounded ends on top.


 
2. Insert right strip number 1 into left strip number 1, and slide the right strip forward.


 
3. Insert left strip number 2 into right strip number 1, and slide right strip number 1 forward.


 
4. Insert right strip number 1 into left strip number 3, and slide the right strip forward.


 
5. Insert left strip number 4 into right strip number 1.


 
6. This is what you should have.


 
7. Slide the right strip 1 upward to make room for strip number 2.


 
8. Insert left strip number 1 into right strip number 2.


 
9. Insert right strip number 2 into left strip number 2, and gently slide the right strip all the way through.


 
10. Insert left strip number 3 into right strip number 2.


 
11. Insert right strip number 2 into left strip number 4.


 
12. This is what you should have.


 
13. Slide right strips 1 and 2 upward to make room for strip number 3.


 
14. Weave strips 3 and 4 the way you did 1 and 2.


 
15. This is the finished heart!


 
16. You can use it as a box!


  Decorate your heart. Describe it to your friends. To whom will you give it? When and why? Do you prefer to give or receive gifts?
