Chain of friendship
 While making starting chains (crochet), students talk about connections and friendships.

You will need:

  • For each student, a piece of yarn, about three yards long. A variety of colors will make the activity more interesting.
Suggested vocabulary:

Instructions:

1. Make a loop about three inches from one end of the string, with the long end on top.


 
2. Fold the long end of the yarn down and under the loop.


 
3. Insert your thumb and index finger into the loop.


 
4. Pull the yarn through the loop and tighten the link with the short end of the yarn.


 
5. Pull gently with the long end of the yarn to adjust the size of the loop.


 
6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 to create new links in the chain.


 
7. Repeat about twenty times to create a chain.


 
8. Connect to another person's chain: Put your loops on top of each other.


 
9. Create a new link through both. Continue your own chains.


 
10. Connect to a third person's chain and continue your own.


 
11. By the end of this activity, the class has created a net of chains. Following individual chains, discuss who is connected to whom.
